What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?

What is SAF?
is an industry term used to reference an alternative aviation fuel. It is a type of non-conventional jet fuel made from resources that can be regenerated, also known as renewable feedstocks. It is chemically similar to conventional aviation fuel but comes from non-fossil sources, making it a lower-carbon alternative on a life cycle basis.

What is SAF made of?
SAF can be produced from a variety of alternative materials without necessarily depleting natural resources. Common SAF bio‑based sources include: used cooking oil, animal waste fats, and agricultural or forestry residues.

How is SAF produced?
SAF's feedstocks are collected and then refined into SAF by a producer. SAF is then mixed with conventional jet fuel to create a blended product. The blended fuel is transported to an airport's fueling facility, waiting to be uplifted to an aircraft.

Is SAF compatible with existing infrastructures?
SAF is compatible with existing airport infrastructure and aircraft, making it a ‘drop-in’ alternative to conventional aviation fuel.
What makes SAF impactful?


Lower GHG emissions
is not emission free but has lower net carbon life cycle emissions than conventional jet fuel, with the potential to reduce the carbon intensity of aviation fuel combustion by up to approximately 80%.

The current production capacity of SAF is insufficient to meet the global demand. IATA announced that SAF production in 2025 represented only 0.6% of total jet fuel consumption.

Air Canada’s climate-related ambition sets out mid-term targets in support of its long-term aspirational goal of net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, in addition to a 50 million research and development fund for decarbonization technologies such as SAF.
